A tale of two wheelers

It’s cycling season again!  Ok, I have seen families out on their bicycles over the past few months, but I’m not counting brave hearty souls.  I’m talking about us fair-weather cyclists, for whom two consecutive weeks of some sunny days and temperatures averaging over 5 degrees is the true sign of cycling season.  Yes, of course you’ll warm up once you start cycling, but it’s that first five minutes that makes or breaks it for me.  And this winter broke me.

This cycling season should prove interesting in our family.  Our girls are very different – Grace is the bull in the china shop; Ella just wants to buy some china – and cycling brings out these differences very clearly.  Grace has been on a bike since age 3, loves speeding on her new gear bike, and is game for long rides.  Ella likes her pink bike… mostly sitting in the driveway.

To be fair, Ella has been doing more actual riding, so that’s a good sign.  Still, it’s going to be a family divided, with Grace and George dashing off, and Ella and me watching their backs (in the “left in the dust” sense rather than the “gotcha covered” sense).

Among the cycling adventures planned this season:  travel Nanaimo’s E&N trail down to the waterfront and ferry over to Newcastle Island to do some trail riding.  I think for that one Ella and I will report on the best points at which to give up the trail and head for some lunch.
